Ruangguru

Ruangguru is Indonesia’s largest technology-enabled education company, based in Jakarta and founded in 2014. It began as a marketplace connecting students with private tutors but, finding that model hard to scale, pivoted into a subscription-based online learning app, and has grown into one of Southeast Asia’s most prominent edtech platforms.

Ruangguru offers a range of products built around affordable, scalable digital learning. Its flagship Ruang Belajar provides educational videos, exercises, animated lessons, quizzes, and infographic summaries, while Ruanglesonline offers on-demand tutor consultation and Ruangles supports private tutoring. The platform covers a wide range of school subjects and exam preparation and has expanded into skills training and corporate/government learning. It reports serving more than 15 million users with more than 300,000 teachers across 100+ subject areas.

Ruangguru uses an affordable subscription model designed to reach a mass audience across Indonesia, and has expanded into other Southeast Asian markets such as Vietnam. It raised a $150 million Series C in late 2019 and a further ~$55 million round, bringing total funding to roughly $200+ million. It is well suited to Indonesian and Southeast Asian students wanting affordable, app-based learning and tutoring.
